I have to admit, I'm a Kanye Fan. I even spent over 300 or so dollars for a friend and I to enjoy some awesome seats at Kanye's massive Glow In The Dark Tour. Aside from the music, Kanye has always had a bad attitude about being snubbed at certain award shows. Now granted, some tirades were justified, some were just right down ridiculous, but last night's was just down right disgusting.

I could never understand how a 32 yr old man would think it was okay to rain on a 19 year old girls parade? Obviously, this was something big for her, considering how Country isn't on heavy rotation on MTV whatsoever. This was a moment for Taylor Swift to thank her tweens for helping her reach the top and crossover onto the mainstream and Ye' killed it for Ms. Swift.

Granted, Beyonce did have the better video of the two. Yet, Kanye needs to realize its the peoples choice and for christ sake its the MTV Music Awards. I wouldn't cry over a damn moon man, especially a category that I was not nominated for in award show. Now, I'm not sure if Kanye was expecting the backlash that he has received, but bad press is always good press. In a month or so all will be forgiven, but then again like Katy Perry tweet, "Its like you stepped on a Kitten".

So, i woke up this afternoon(yeah, thats right) to find the internet going NUTS over Drake's aka Wheelchair Jimmy's new video, "Best I Ever Had". I honestly thought all the hoopla was over the fact that the video has just been released, but it was because the video was nothing more than a 4 minute ad for Frederick's of Hollywood.
So, whats the big deal? Sex sells right? I've seen more breast out in the open when I took a trip to Miami about four years ago. I even have a pair of my own, so a music video isn't bound to piss me off.

I'm actually more upset at the women who are deciding to drop their loyalty towards Drake because of the video alone. I mean he isn't quit exactly Billy Graham, but then again who knows what he is doing behind closed doors. The guy has been singing about the best piece of vjay jay he has ever had for the last several months and now everyone wants to get upset because at least twenty pairs of breast were displayed in the video? HA!

Drake, with the help of Kanye who by the is the video's director were not the first to ever display large amounts of boobage on film and certainly won't be the last. I think just about every rap music video has, so he's doing nothing more than what hasn't been done before him. If anything he'll release a second version of the video not for the ladies though, but for BET. It's well known that BET will not allow that much skin to be shown on their channel, and the only way to clean up for the tweens watching 106 and park is to make a second edited video.

All this talk is hogwash, I've seen more breast in Jay-z "Big Pimpin" video.
I'm just sayin.....
-And I don't want to hear the excuse that it was Carnival. So, what a breast is breast.

Mos Def's -The Ecstatic Album Review.

After almost a three year hiatus Mos Def returns from the depths of hell(the big screen) with the release of his new album titled The Ecstatic. Now, we all know on his off time Black Dante aka Mos is usually busy with other projects in the acting world.
I'm generally a big opponent of rappers who decide to "act" for the following reasons; they suck at acting or they're music takes a downward spiral into a dark abyss of crap while they're acting flourishes. Enter Mos Def, our first piece of evidence ? True Magic.

I'm not exactly sure what he was thinking when he dropped True Magic. I really only liked 3 songs out of 14 tracks. Okay, thats harsh maybe four tracks. I guess my feelings towards True Magic were the same that everyone at the time had about The New Danger(which i loved) which was ..WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?? Creative Differences, I guess.

Moving forward to today, I received The Ecstatic earlier this week and jump into this project with unbiased ear like usual. At first the length of each song turned me off, but i thought to myself its about quality not quantity. After, playing the album back to back, I'm somewhat impressed. I'm just ecstatic(cheesy, no?) that its something to listen to besides the typical disco hip hop thats being pushed through our ears.

Any who, here is my play by play of The Ecstatic, track for track:

1.Supermagic: The typical Bismillah al rahman al rahim intro, done always over an ever oh so dope beat this time produced by Madlib's little brother Oh No. Nepotism? perhaps. It's all in the name of Allah/God and Hip Hop.

2.Twilite Speedball: Produced by Chad Hugo. Chad who is one half of The Neptunes and in my opinion my one of my top 10 producers. Not too much going on this track, honestly I listened to the beat the entire time.

3.Auditorium: Produced by Madlib, featuring Slick Rick. I think this is easily my favorite track on the album. The production is done effortlessly, lyrics from each artist are solid. Yep, that's it this is my favorite. Slick Rick smooth, laid back, story telling flow made this hip hop head shed a tear of joy.

4.Wahid: Another Madlib produced track. I'm not wilding over the track, but its definitely listenable.

5.Priority: Producer: Preservation. I'm not sure what this was about? God, My Spirit?? knowing my spirit? whatever this ode was to I enjoyed the piano and the horns.

6.Quite Dog Bite Hard: Produced by Preservation. This beat was funky, I can dig this track. I like.

7.Life in Marvelous Times: Produced by Mr.Flash. Production was horrible. Me no like, that's right I said me no like.

8.The Embassy: Produced by Mr. Flash. I don't know this Mr. Flash guy is but, I'm not a fan of his work thus far. I'm somewhat over the whole middle eastern sound, and this just put the nail in the coffin.I liked the intro to the song if that makes it any better.

9.No Hay Nada Mas: Produced by Preservation. I like the track, very laid back, sounds like a cross of Kung-Fu Master meets Mexico. I know a lot of guys are not going to like this track for the sheer fact that Mos is singing and in spanish this time. I like when Mos Def sings on a track, and that he exercise the use of our second language.*cough,cough* What? I'm Hispanic damn it, I fucks with it jeeze.

10.Pistola: Produced by Oh No. I had to listen to it twice, not that it was the best track on the album. It's no Mr. Flash produced song, it makes the grade for now.

11.Pretty Danger: Madlib on the track once again. Track reminds me of some old 70's player anthem. Lyrics, aren't bad.

12.Workers comp: Produced by Mr Flash. As i stated earlier, I'm a fan of Mos Def's singing. However, this song makes me wish he would stop. Just, for this song alone.
Think it had something to do with the producer. Okay, production wasn't bad this time around.

13.Revelations: Produced by Madlib. It makes the pass, i like.

14.Roses: Produced and featuring Georgia Anne Muldrow. I like this track, its no Slick Rick Collabo, but this is definitely a nice one. Georgia singing, while Mos lays down a couple of bars. Nice.

15.History: Produced By Dilla, ft Talib Kweli. James Yancy x BlackStar x Hip Hop.
Old Mos Def, shines on this track. It leaves me with something to wait for until a new BlackStar album.

16.Casa Bey: Produced by Mos Def and Preservation. Another 70's funk filled track. I feel like I'm watching the intro to Dolemite or something. Nice track tho.

Overall, I like this album. It makes me forget that i ever owned True Magic. However, I don't see it surpassing The New Danger and it will never be anything close to Black on Both Sides, but an era filled with auto tuned laced albums this will do for a Hip Hop head as myself.

I don't know how "unreleased" this video is, if i can dig into my mental Rolodex for a minute I clearly remember watching this video online about 2 or 3 years ago. I think i stumbled upon the video by accident after watching Consequence's The Good, The Bad and The Ugly vid, either way it's not old. Well, at least to me its not. Now, when they decide to leak the video for Kanye's Spaceship off the College Dropout Album, I will be more than ecstatic. Don't get me wrong this video and song are definitely HOT. All three artist killed the track. I just was just expecting something else.

However, the question that seems to be on everyone's mind is why? Well, the folks at XXL were able to obtain the answer from Tia herself, she was quoted as saying. “The reason I felt that it would be interesting to write a book is because I have had a very big struggle in my life,” she said. “I grew up without a father, my mom was a single parent and it was very hard for her to raise six kids on her own. Being the oldest, I experienced a lot of things growing up, a lot of challenges in life that I went through. I got married young, I had two kids and after that I ended up getting in a another relationship.”

Maxwell's Pretty Wings Video

I have to admit when i first blogged that Maxwell's Black Summers Night album would be released this year, i really didn't think it was going to happen. I thought to myself yeah right, Columbia Records will once again push the album and anything associated with this project for another hrrrmmmm 3 years. I took an L today, why? ThePretty Wings Video premiered on B.E.T. today. The video is very different from the "normal" disco r&b videos that we tend to see ever so often now days. I mean you know how it goes, the club, the lights, a not so great singer assisted by autotune, dance steps, and other "crap".

The video speaks for the song itself, its about as soft and beautiful has the lyrics that are being expressed through the song. Now enough of my blabbing, ladies and gents Pretty Wings...

Tyson Documentary

A film about infamous boxer Mike Tyson is scheduled to be released in Ny and La on April 24. The film simply titled Tyson, is documentary which takes an intimate look into the rise and the fall of one of Boxing most iconic figures. The film originally premiered in 2008 at the Cannes Film Festival, and has received nothing but great reviews. I'm excited for this movie, I'm awaiting the release of the film nationwide.

When i first heard Asher Roth last year, I was not impressed. I was a hater, yes a big one at that. Hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, umm shall i go on? one more for the road? Yes, hate. When i saw he was listed to perform at The Roots Picnic this summer, I thought eh. I mean haven't been able to log onto the internetzzz without hearing about Mr. A. Roth just about everyday, and now i understand why the net has been buzzing.

First things first let me get this out the way, Asher is no Eminem. There have only been a few rappers that we tend to embrace who lack in the melanin department that genuinely have skills. It seems like every new decade Hip Hop receives a new "Great White Hype", and Asher Roth definitely lives up to the hype. Yes, I the Grinch had a change of heart. Santa, came early to Haterville and dropped an album in my lap today. Asleep in the Bread Aisle is the major label debut from Asher, the 12 track album is nothing less than a solid album.

I mean don't get me wrong there was at least two tracks i can do without, especially the one with Keri Hilson. I'm sorry, I'm a chick, and I wasn't feeling it. Yet, of course you have to at least have one ladies track on an album. Ladies are the number one consumers when it comes to albums. Yet, Blunt Cruisin', I love College,la di da, are some of the few standout tracks on the album. Asher, I drink a 40 in your behalf. I can appreciate an album with a crazy wordplay and well a persona that is definitely every little bit of his music and is not fabricated as this music industry.

Res will be performing life at the world famous Bohemian Caverns/Liv with local band E44 on April 23rd @ 8:30pm. Its an 18 and up affair and only 15 dollars in advance for the show. Its been a while since we all heard from Res, but shes definitely has been busy. Not only is she still doing her Solo Dolo thing, but shes also one-third of Idle Warship. A trio which consist of Talib Kweli, Res, and Toronto Songstress Graph Nobel. I'm anxiously awaiting new material from all three as a group and their solo efforts. This should be a treat for anyone who is looking to stray away from music's grasp of the Auto-tune.

How crazy is this? Apparently, two Carnegie Mellon seniors created a student taught course which digs into sneaker culture, shoe design, child labor issues, and marketing.

That's right Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson has an upcoming show April 25th @ Club 930 in NW DC. If you were just born yesterday or lived under a rock for the last several years then you know that ?uestlove is just not a talented producer, drummer, journalist, but also one dope ass DJ. I actually was able to catch him spinning at the Whiskey Bar last year in Austin, Tx after a Roots Show and the floor was packed. The music selection was totally different from the norm, but it was definitely what the mutha-shut ya mouth doctor ordered. I'm sure the show will be the same , but totally different at the same time. I never expect the same from ?uestlove, and thats what a DOPE ass Dj is all about. The show starts at 11pm, tixs are 15 dollars, no way a stupid recession can stop you from buying these tix.

I can recall being 10 when this album dropped and thinking to myself "I like this album" and what in the hell is my mother doing with this?? At the time my mother was in her late 30's, mother of four, and married. I remember stealing my mothers cd and then getting in trouble every time for doing so, not because i didn't ask to borrow it, but because of the content. Oh well, why did you buy it in the first place?? lol.

Now in my twenties i have to thank my mother for making that purchase, the Chronic totally changed the sound of Rap in the 90's. I attended a primarily white elementary school and just about every white classmate i had or knew in that school own that album! Hell, this girl even rock the classic album cover tee shirt.
Rap at this time was slowly but surely taking over America. Now has we await for the Detox, i think its only best that we get lifted once more ... Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls here's Dr Dre's Let Me Ride.

MtvU selects 5 up and coming artist every week and gives the public the choice to vote for who they think should make MtvU's video rotation. I've been listening to Ayah heavily for the last year and she definitely in my opinion takes the top honors. What everyone just needs to do now is go to MtvU: The Freshman and VOTE(several times)for BELIEVE.
Believe is the first single of Ayahs forthcoming album 4:15 which is scheduled to be released next week .

DMV's own, Diamond District just released a new track via there myspace titled I Mean Business. Diamond District consist of three of the areas nicest MC's/Producers, Oddisee, YU, and XO. I really think that DC is bound to make noise this year right along with LA, NYC, and ATL this year has far as hip hop is concerned and these three are going to lead the way. Not, to downplay any other artist in the area because we definitely have the talent now its time for us to get out there and stop having everyone sleep on us.

Sorry, for the delay, things have been kinda of hectic over here.
Any who, I don't know if anyone has checked out the concert scene for the month of December, but its pretty much dead. It appears as if no one is coming to the lone star state for a while, i demand answers!!! Anyone? *crickets*...Oh well, I'm sure there are other events to follow. I will definitely keep you posted.

Tues, Oct 18.
West coast rapper Murs will be performing at Emos in downtown Austin, Texas. Tickets to the show are 10 dollars for general admission, doors open at 9pm, and the show will begin at 10pm.
Also, on the bill set to perform at the concert is Big Pooh, Kidz in the Hall, Isaiah, and Chaundon.

If you never been to Emos be prepared to enjoy yourself, this happens to be one of my favorite venues for live shows.

Dortch has been receiving scores of great reviews from coast to coast. A Good Day To Be Black and Sexy is not schedule to be released until winter of 2008. Finally, a real hip hop act arrives to the city. San Antonio is usually known for bring god awful artist to the city. I don't know how many times Amanda Perez or even any artist with the name "Young" or "Lil" have performed here. This show is definitely for the backpackers, the underground, and the real hip hop heads. Performances are as followed, Outerspace, Reef The Lost Cauze, and Jedi Mind Tricks headlining this tour. So, this Thursday save your gas money and bring yourself down to the Rock Bottom Tattoo Bar to hear the sounds of Philadelphia. Rock Bottom Tattoo Bar is located one block away from broadway on Ave B, still unsure where Ave B is located? Google maps or Mapquest, take your pick.

Doors open at 8, tickets are priced at $15 dollars the night of the show.
Even if you have never heard of any of the artist i suggest you come and just check them out.
I'm very familiar with JMT and Reef the Lost Cauze, now Outerspace will be something different for me.
